Wine Buy: Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day always brings out the rosy in me for some reason. Although it has certainly become a "Hallmark" holiday, I still believe everyone possesses a truly creative, romantic side which can be shared with our special someone (including the libations of the day).
This year, I have selected two wonderfully colorful and tasteful teasers, which are sure to please.
To begin the evening, splurge on Perrier-Jouet, Fleur de Champagne, Brut Rose 1995. Visually, from its almost salmon color, and on through its gorgeous fruit-filled, yet dry and delicate palate, this is a winner. Totally stylish, with great character and depth (like the person I'd love to marry), this is a heart-stealer. Even at its price of $160.00, it is worth it. It truly makes for a memorable occasion. If you are popping "the big question," try popping Perrier Jouet Brut Rose Fleur 1995, and you'll be sure to get the desired results…if not from the person -- for sure from this bottle.
And now for dessert…Quady Elysium Black Muscat 2000.
Andrew Quady is one of my two favorite dessert winemakers in California. He has a way of producing very delicate and beautiful "sweet wines," which in other hands, might fall into the cloying, lack-luster category.
Elysium, the Greek name for heaven, has distinctive rose-petal on both the nose and palate-which on a chilly winter night, can touch you with springtime. Slightly plum and rhubarb on the palate(I didn't run the rhubarb by Arthur, as he would have called me a "wine geek"), the wine finishes long and off-dry. A great finishing touch on any evening, especially Valentine's Day. The average retail price is $11.99 for a half-bottle.
